Tumbling Creek Lodge was opened officially to the public in the fall of 2005. We were previously known as Whispering Oaks and were a strictly private wing shooting and hunting destination for many corporations in the region. Specializing in bob white quail and eastern wild turkey hunts we honed our skills in land management and wildlife habitat. Focusing strictly on the grounds we soon realized that the game populations would flourish once non native and invasive species were removed from their habitat. For over ten years prior to the opening of Tumbling Creek we experimented with many types of warm season grasses and native shrub species and with the help of Quail Unlimited and experts from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, we have found a recipe for success. The implementing of several sound land management and wildlife incentive programs along with early release systems and covey protection sites have had a positive effect on our bird populations, and because of those early initiatives we are enjoying wonderful wing shooting today.
Lodging
Our main lodge and conference center along with our three private cabins and gourmet kitchen are located on our water front property fifty miles west of Nashville Tennessee. Nestled along a private 2 ½ mile stretch of crystal clear tumbling creek, we have created an area that is relaxing and a pleasure just to experience. This location has been the inspiration for many beautiful works by some very well known landscape and wildlife artists. We are fortunate and blessed to be located on the banks of one of a handful of freestone spring fed creeks in middle Tennessee. The clear cold creek boasts a wide variety of fresh water fish species; however we focus our efforts on the rainbow and occasional brown trout that call tumbling creek home.
Our Staff
Hunt and operations manager, Tyler Wilson has spent much of his life knee deep in some of the best trout waters east of the Mississippi. A native East Tennessean he enjoyed the wonderful fishing the Smokey Mountains had to offer. While attending Appalachian State University a quiet little college nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, he was surrounded by cold water streams and mountains teaming with grouse, and wild turkeys. Throughout his college career he dedicated himself to the sport of fly fishing and introducing others to the joys nature has to offer. It was a perfect fit for Tyler to join the team at Tumbling Creek, with his passion for bird dogs and his strong dedication to fly fishing he has brought a spark to the overall atmosphere.
The Dogs
We have been dedicated to upland bird hunting since our inception; however our love for wing shooting was born out of our passion for well trained and mannered gun dogs. The electrifying frenzy of a covey rise would mean very little without the majesty and the expertise of a well matched pair of gun dogs. For us the joy of hunting comes with the realization of the potential in each dog run. We understand what it takes to nurture a young dog and bring it up in a world full of opportunities for it to succeed. We have learned that if the breeding is right then the dog with a little help and plenty of birds will teach himself. Great dogs in their element, performing for no one but you, that in its purest form is what we are seeking here at Tumbling Creek.
We are achieving our gun dog goals with the joint effort of Keith Pierce, master trainer and guide from “Pretty Boy Kennels” Keith has been with Tumbling Creek as a guide and trainer since our opening. He has brought his knowledge of bird dogs, along with his skills as a professional guide to our grounds and helped us achieve a very strong and talented kennel.
Our philosophy here at Tumbling Creek, is to focus on the potential of our dogs. We do not discriminate between breeds, but rather fit dogs to the personalities of our guides. Each dog has its own advantages and disadvantages due to the breed; however with a good matching of handler, brace partner, and training we can enhance the positives and tone down the negatives.
Tumbling Creek Lodge is here to preserve a tradition enjoyed for so many years in the Volunteer State. We have been dedicated to habitat restoration and quail recovery. Our clients have been enjoying big covey rises for years, and now that everyone can come and enjoy the beauty of wing shooting and the satisfaction that accompanies a good hunt, we are excited about things to come.
