Sheep River Camps

For many years we have been guiding in two locations, the first area is in the interior, the other in the Prince William Sound. These areas are unique to our method of operation, as the terrain and inaccessibility make these areas unattractive to the average guide/hunter. The result is very little hunting pressure by others. This is the main attraction to us.

Client transportation to hunting area and return to point of arrival in Alaska is usually by bush plane. However, a boat may be used at times in the Prince William Sound. We arrange transportation with professional carriers for efficiency and safety. We do not include cost of transportation in our hunt prices as some hunts require different air-craft, and also flight time can only be estimated due to weather conditions and aircraft or boat used at time of hunt. Once a hunt is confirmed, we can give an estimate of this cost. Please note that no transportation cost is included in hunt price.

Sheep River CampsEach client will be hunting with one guide throughout the hunt, unless other plans are made. Client must share equally with the guide in packing their gear, food and other supplies. Also hide, horns and meat. This is not as bad as it may sound, but one thing for sure: a over loaded guide is not a happy camper. Actually under all that hair, your guide is really almost human. If there is a physical reason or if you don't feel up to the required packing, we can provide a professional packer to help out on your hunt. We highly recommend a packer. Most hunters can handle the extra cost easier than a heavy pack. Cost of packer vary depending on hunt date and requirements.

As a last word - our hunts are NOT a test of endurance. There are no mountains that you have to run up, we run no races, we have no set distance that you have to go– you don't have to impress your guide or anyone. This is a hunting trip in the truest sense, in a land that many dream about. It is a great trip and experience, we assure you of that.

The following number of days and prices are for a possible hunt time, not including travel time or lay over for weather or unforeseen delays before or after hunt. If a hunt is booked for so many days and to take place on such and such date, that is the time planned for a price. If delays occur so that the client cannot be in the hunting area, the cost an time set aside is not changed. We have to live with what ever weather or flight problems accrue, as well as a client.

On any hunt there can be hunt time lost due to weather or physical problems and these times can be very trying for both clients and guide. However, some flexibility and understanding will go a long ways for an enjoyable trip if anything like this should happen.

We plan our hunts for a full 10 days of hunting as this time frame seem to be popular and works well for a the average client with average capability. Some hunters should consider a longer hunt time to fit their physical capabilities.

Sheep Hunts

Sheep River CampsOur sheep hunts are in a nearly inaccessible area of the interior where we have hunted for over 35 years. It is very mountainous with a fair population of sheep, they run a natural cycle of ups and down in relation to weather and predatory conditions, to date we have seen no other hunters within this area so hunting pressure is very small. The rams our clients take average a great deal larger than the average taken from more easily accessible areas.

Good Physical conditioning is fairly important, the better shape a person is in the hunt can be enjoyed more and may have some relationship with success. Foot wear is very important. We recommend mountaineering boots made by Koflach, raincoat & pants, gaiters and rain hat. Backpack, sleeping bag & pad and clothing appropriate for mountain hunting, these are the most important and most needed in top quality of any other gear. High quality full size binoculars are also needed. They should be in the 9x35, 10x40 size range, The mini or pocket size are next to worthless, on the other side of the fence the really big ones are to heavy when climbing in sheep country.

As for rifles, about any thing that you can shoot well will be ok. The average range is usually around 200 yards. Sheep are not hard to kill, like Mountain Goat and bear so any deer rifle will do.

Bear Hunts

We're providing more detail on this hunt as bear hunting is the least understood of any other hunts.

The question we are asked most often is, “What is the best time of year to hunt bear?” Now that is a loaded question! First lets take a look at country they live in. Brown bear in this area den very high in the mountains. It's usually the big or old boars that emerge first, and this is late March and April. There hides are prime and we see no “so called” rubbed bear that are so common in areas of milder climate. Brown bear den up in late November or December with the big boars being the last to den.

Method of hunting is by snow machine and snow shoes, in late March and early April. This can be fairly demanding physically, but the size and quality of bear that can be taken make up for any hardships and effort experienced. In May bear are coming down to the rivers and tide flats where hunting is much easier, as all bear will be out of their dens and moving a great deal, with the rutting season starting the middle of May. The weather on these spring hunts is usually very good– and we are getting long days like 20 hours of daylight in May. As the snow goes away the hunting is on foot and hip boots are required.

Brown bear season ends June 15th in one of our areas. We hunt black bear till the last of June. Hides are very good and some good fishing can be had for sea run Cutthroat and Dolly Varden at the same time.

Sheep River CampsFall Brown bear season opens the 1st of September, and we hunt through December. Bears at this time of year are feeding on salmon in the low country and berries in the higher areas. Hides are good but lack the fullness of spring. Of course the later in the season the better the hides. Daylight gets less and the weather not so good the later in the season one goes. Fall bear hunts are usually less demanding and some combo with other game be can worked out.

All bears are unpredictable. Contrary to popular belief, black bears are probably more dangerous when physical contact is made than brown/grizzly “according to records”. Brown bear are very aggressive at times, and some conditions. Most of the time they are very shy, but can appear and disappear like ghost in the night or “summer wages“. All bear are twilight feeders by nature; but to keep their reputation of being unpredictable, bears are seen anytime of day or night, mainly when least expected. All bear are sensitive to weather conditions.

When guiding bear hunters, we prefer rifle hunters. Their rifle should be of dependable make as when hunting in Alaskan bear country adverse conditions are the norm. No matter what caliber the hunter should be very experienced with its use. Of course we recommend a healthy caliber and heavy bullet, but more important is to have a rifle that can be handled properly. Any questions on this are welcome as we are very critical on firearms used.

Hip boots are necessary foot gear (in style for manly foot wear), good quality rain gear, sleeping bag, backpack and clothing that is appropriate for the hunt date booked. Some recommendations will be sent when a hunt date is booked with more information appropriate for that time of year. Good binoculars with high light transmission is a must: 8x56 or 10x50 are very good for bear hunting, however the 9x35 & 10x40 will do very well. The mini or so called pocket type are not of any use in this area.

Moose Hunts

Moose season starts August 20th and goes through September 20th. Some backpacking is necessary while hunting but we use pack animals (two or four legged type animals) to get the meat, antlers and cape to airstrip. All actual hunting is on foot. Moose range throughout our area where there is timber and bush. The average size taken is in the 60” / 64” range, with a lot of mass and long points.

The Cost of getting meat out will involve a extra flight, and this depends on where the moose was taken. If a Super Cub is used a number of flights may be necessary; a 206 can get by with one flight. Again hunt price dose not include any flying cost. Moose are not hard to kill so any rifle you use on deer, sheep and the likes is OK if the heaviest bullet is used.

Base Camp

Sheep River CampsAlthough our base camps are located so that hunting can be done from them, hunters and guides usually spend most of the hunt well away from the base camp.

When away from base camps we use expedition quality mountain tents and provide appropriate gear and food for the hunt. This is a very efficient and successful method of hunting as prime time hunting hours are not lost in traveling to and from the camp.
