With our spring black bear hunts running at 100% success since 1990 and our fall hunts at about 90-95% our bear hunts are high success hunts! Our unique location on the forest fringe gives us easy access to quality bear habitat in both the farmland and the forest. Our black bear hunting area in the forest is comprised of over 200 square miles in addition to the 100 square miles of farmland we can hunt with permission of land owners. Lots of ground and lots of bears.
We have taken our share of monster bears with big fellows in the 400 LB range with over 20 inch skulls each year. Our heaviest bear to date was well over 500 lbs spring weight and the largest hide measured 7'6" from nose to tail. Though most of the bears we take are black approximately 1 in 5 is a colored bear. Our northern bears have beautiful coats and make a fine hunting trophy.
Most of our black bear hunts are baited hunts ( though we do have some spot and stalk opportunities in the farmland in September) . Our baits are put out over a month before the season starts and we generally run twice as many baits as our total # of hunters for any given season. This I feel is the reason for our high success rates and high quality hunting experience. For those who don't mind roughing it a bit we do use portable tent camps to hunt the more remote parts of our area thereby distributing the harvest throughout our operating area.
Since 1990 we have been sending our hunters home with large bodied heavy horned northern trophy white-tails. At 250lbs to well over 300 lb. on the hoof these northern monarchs are exciting to hunt. Our hunters have put several deer in the Boone and Crockett record book and taken many more that have missed the minimum by only inches. With harvest rates consistently between 90% and 100% we have proven that we have the habitat the numbers and the genetics for productive hunting and for the production of monster white-tails.
Located in Saskatchewan's North West near the town of Meadow Lake our deer hunting area encompasses 215 square miles of largely aspen forest interspersed with stands of Spruce and Pine. Natural meadows , forest openings, ridges, lakes and logged areas add to make a varied terrain and topography. Very simply this is prime white-tail habitat .
Our Saskatchewan whitetail deer hunts are baited stand hunts. About two to three weeks before the season the guides and I are out on the area looking for sign and setting up. The key to our success is in this preseason work. Through the years we have learned a great deal about where our deer like to be running between 75 and 85 stand sites per year. With the use of scouting cameras we have even a better idea of what awaits our hunters.
Since 1990 I have seen the antler size of our white-tail deer fluctuate with the better years seemingly following early springs with early green up. Based on my experience the bulk of our harvest still continues to be good solid mid to high 140 class deer with anywhere from 40% to 60% of the harvest going 150 or better depending on the type of spring we have had and how severe the winter.
We use both large portable treestands with camouflaged wind aprons and stand bags to keep our hunters warm and portable ground blinds. All our stands and ground blinds have shooting rails to assist our hunters in good shot placement. Increasingly our older hunters are requesting ground blinds and not only are these comfortable but very effective especially for scent control. Most of our deer are taken mid-day so an all day sit is required.
In addition to our hunts based at our fully modern base camp we have 2 outposts that have proven to be very popular with our hunters. One is permanent with thermostatically controlled propane heat and electric lights . The other is a portable camp with thermostatically controlled propane heat and gas lights.
At Safari River Outdoors we are proud to offer a very rich and productive 5 day waterfowl hunting experience that includes field hunts for decoying honkers, pond hunting for several species of dabblers and hunting the big water for speedy but game divers. On top of this we have a very challenging 10 station sporting clay range to hone your skills and share with your hunting companions. Add to this a little pike fishing on a beautiful northern lake and a campfire at the end of the day and you begin to see why our hunters keep coming back. Our unique location at the northern most end of the farmland sees us hunting birds that have had little or no hunting pressure ensuring decoying action and" in range "shooting.
Goose Hunts
Opportunities include Greater and Lesser Canadas, Speckle-Belles and Snows with the greater Canadas making up about 80% of the harvest. Most all our goose hunts take place in the farmland using both layout and willow blinds and bigfoot and shell decoys. The Specks and Snows generally do not show up until mid -September. All goose hunting is in the morning and we get in a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 goose shoots per 5 day trip.
Duck Hunts
Opportunities include Mallards, Bluebills, Ringnecks, Widgeons, Gadwals, Pintails, Shoveller, Greenwing and Bluewing Teals, Canvasbacks, Redheads, Goldeneyes and Bufflehead. What our duck hunters continually comment on is the variety of both species and habitat. 90% of our ducks are taken over water . We use portable blinds for our pond shoots and 18 foot go-devil boats for the open water. Most groups in the course of 5 days will take 10 to 11 different species . Grouse hunting is also available after the September 15 opener. Generally on a 5 day trip we will spend an afternoon chasing ruffies and spruce grouse in the forest.
Bear /Bird Combination hunts
How about hunting geese in the morning and sitting in a treestand the same evening waiting for a bear? Because of our unique location we can offer bear hunting to our bird hunting clients. These are very popular hunts and are run in early September.
Base Camp (Ranch)
All our hunts are based at our riverside ranch which is located near the confluence of two rivers, the Beaver and the Meadow. Situated on the edge of the forest line our unique location provides for easy access to the agricultural lands to the south and to the lakes, rivers and forest uplands to the north. There is a large Ducks Unlimited Marsh system near the ranch which attracts a wide range of wildlife. Accommodations are fully modern and quite comfortable, with all the amenities you would expect. For eating and lounging we have a large, modern mobile home. For guest accommodations we have a log cabin with three bedrooms, bathroom and living-room that can sleep up to six people and a new 18'X36' duplex with 2 seperate 18'X18' units with seperate baths and 36' deck which can accomodate 3 people per unit.. We also have a smaller cabin that can accommodate two quite comfortably. We use propane heat in both of our guest cabins. The location of the ranch was chosen for its proximity to both huntable and watchable wildlife and it is truly a unique and special place.
Wild Cabin Outpost
Our 18 by 24 building features 2 bedrooms with bunk beds to accommodate 4 comfortably, propane heat, lights, cook stove and fridge. It is easiest accessed by water though it is possible to drive to the camp however the road is very narrow and very rough. Excellent pike fishing May, June, September to Mid October. Excellent duck hunting mid September to mid October. Bear hunting May and September. Bear and duck hunts are guided only Please contact us for pricing
