The .416 Remington Magnum

Will Stop Anything from Large Squirrels to Mack Trucks.

By S. L. Merriam

The .416 has the reputation for being just about perfect for shooting everything from large squirrels to large Mack Trucks. Its weight is comparable to the other Remington 700 Magnum Rifles.

The .416 Remington follows suit with the famed .416 Rigby that has been famous in Africa for years. Most of these big guns are sighted in for 100 yards and have a trajectory that strongly resembles a rainbow after 200 yards. Keep in mind you are trying to push a 400-grain projectile fast enough to even fly.

In all honesty I know from sighting it in and later shooting a Cape Buffalo in Africa with it, the .416 is a serious killing machine. In the world of dangerous game such as the big bears of North America and the big 5 in Africa, it can hold its own and part of yours also.

As for killing, it does well on one end; the maiming on my end if I didn’t hold its sight. The incredible knock-down power and accuracy for such a large projectile is overwhelming. I used a 30.06 as a familiar reference, with the 30.06 being dead on at 200 yards and the .416 Remington sighted dead on at 150 Yards.

As you can see, the 100-yard drop is almost identical to a 180 grain 30.06, yet you are pushing a bullet almost half larger in caliber and over twice the weight. In the large and dangerous game it is used on, most shots are in the 100 yard class. Keep in mind that sighted in at 150 makes it almost equal in drop at 300 yards as the 30.06.

The main issue with this is the foot-pound of energy. It is known as one of only seven calibers, with factory-loaded ammunition, that is capable of over 5000 foot-pounds of energy at the muzzle. These seven are:

BR #111 .416 REMINGTON MAGNUM... FACT OR FICTION overview

Big Bears – Big Rifles

The .416 Remington Magnum

OVERVIEW

When a Colorado bear hunter travels to Alaska for a blond grizzly the weather locks both he and the bears in cover to ride out the storm. On his last day to hunt they locate two bears feeding on salmon and make a stalk. When the bears leave the river a perfect shot with the .416 Remington drops the big blond bear in its tracks. Unfortunately the second bear is not happy with the situation and charges. The big .416 blows up the dirt at it’s feet discouraging it from getting closer. It returns soon after, charging from behind and comes close to becoming a self defense kill but the .416 blowing up dirt between the bears front feet finally discourage it from trying to attack. Big bears need big guns!
