Cleaning your gun is an essential part of the security measures you have to take to insure both, your safety and a good hunting season. Always remember to take a look at the owners' manual before making any move. Also remember to keep your guns locked away from children. When you are going to manipulate your gun, check if its unloaded. After this step, check the bore of the gun for holes or obstructions.
Only disassemble your gun to a point necessary to clean the spots where the powder residue can get stuck; try not to disassemble it too far. Clean the bolt, bore and chamber.
Search the parts for cracks or wear; check the pieces for excessive or extensive use. If you find one, go to a qualified gunsmith for repairs.
Try to clean from the breech end. If you have to clean from the muzzle, be on the lookout; you have to be extra careful when you clean the crown because any damage here will make the accuracy diminish. Choose the correct patch holder and solvent for your gun; again read the owners' manual for this. Usually every moving part has to be lubricated, but try not to over-lubricate, an increment in lubricant can cause debris to begin accumulating, which results in shooting failures.
When you finish the cleaning of your firearm, make sure to wipe any surface you have make contact with, to avoid the acidic content of your perspiration from causing corrosion. Remember to apply the Lubricant inside the bore, to also prevent the inside from rusting.
Remember, after the cleaning of your gun, remove any guard and check for obstructions before using it again, not only because you can damage your gun because you can suffer injuries if not careful. Never try to remove obstructions by shooting the gun.
