When an inexperienced hunter asks me how important camouflage clothes are the answer is always the same: a lot! Camouflage is one of the principal factors to consider when planning your hunting strategy. Some people still don't seem to understand why, so today I will give you some of the reasons why camouflage is critical to a successful hunt.
First, camouflage will break up your outline and to help you better blend in with your surroundings. For this reason it's important when choosing camo clothes to choose colors that match your surroundings. For example, avoid vibrant green colors during autumn, and avoid using camouflage designed for dense brush areas when you are hunting in an open area, because you this will make you easy to recognize. When the hunting plan is being developed, an experienced hunter always analyzes the locale he will cover. You must put much attention to the colors that dominate the area, and then choose an outfit that is best suited for them.
Another recommendation is to investigate the laws in your chosen hunting area. In some areas it is required for hunters the use bright orange clothing for identification. This measure was adopted to avoid accidents between hunters. If it is required in your area, you may benefit from the utilization of a stand of some sort.
What is a stand? Well, it's basically a physical barrier that separates (hides) you from what you want to hunt. You can buy a stand with similar colors to the surrounding terrain, or you can make your own on the fly by just collecting some surrounding branches and brushes and building it between two trees. This will create a natural looking wall between you and your prey.
The scent factor, one that you must always consider, is how you smell. All animals have a much higher functioning sense of smell than humans. This
becomes a problem for a hunter. You have to hide your odor very well if you expect to have a successful hunt. In general, animals are very cautious and they know how to run away quickly if they feel threatened. If they detect an unusual or strange smell, they probably will not approach it. The good news for you is that there are some kinds of natural scents that you can use on your hunting clothes to mask your scent, if you so choose.
Remember to scent the stand as well if you have a permanent one. If you don't do it, then your scent (or at least some strange odor) will linger on the materials you used to build it and this will make most animals stay away.
