Bears should be treated with respect, not with fear, when you are hunting then. Almost all bears always run when they see humans, and nowadays it is more difficult to hunt them because the restrictions on using hounds. Without hounds, you not only have to pick spots that bears usually visit but also be as “stealthy” as you can.
To hunt bears, you have to study their habits, what they eat, when they rest, and their typical behavior patterns. This understanding will give you a better approach and better chances to reach a zone where they can be shot. Make a little scouting trip to the area before the season. You can't shoot what you can't see, so pick a spot with good visibility. You don’t want angry bears surprising you; bears have the incredible ability of moving very stealthily.
You have to cover or at least minimize your scent; bears have a very good sense of smell and can recognize the scent of humans, and as an advice, wash your hunting outfit in unscented soap and avoid using it on camp while you eat, smoke or drink. You have to use unscented shampoo and deodorant too.
While you are on your hunting stand, avoid eating or smoking completely; bears know these kinds of odors very well and will run in the opposite direction from you. Another obvious advice is to lay completely still and quiet, the visual acuity of bears is based on movement, so any slip from your part will compromise your position and make the bear alert. You have to be very patient when bear hunting.
If you plan on drinking the night before the hunt it is recommendable to drink beer rather than other forms of alcoholic beverages, since your scent on the following day will be more like bread instead of chemicals; bears favor this kind of smell in their search for carbohydrates for hibernation.
If you plan to do a “Hunt Meat”, it is better to do it in the early days of the season, near the opening of the hunting season. However if you plan to hunt for a Rug it’s better in the late part of the season. Always remember to treat your prey with respect, not with fear. Do your homework studding it and sharing your hunting experiences, and you will have your reward. If you are a beginner in hunting, your best option is to bring along a Guide, to avoid unnecessary danger.
