A Season's worth Of 'BIG' Overview

The large networks of main and secondary trails were not the reason that I stopped dead in my tracks. It was the 4 massive rubs lined up in succession that oozed with freshly worked sap. These rubs were so violent and aggressive that they robbed the white pines of their first 2 ½ feet of bottom branches and almost the whole circumference of protective bark. It was very evident that these were not your average, run of the mill, farm bucks.

A Season's worth Of 'BIG' Overview

Terry and Colin Marnach had seen 3 spectacular record class bucks traveling together just 2 weeks before the first stint of the Minnesota firearms season. They knew the biggest one would make Boone and Crockett, which forced them to make a change in tradition and move to a patch of adjacent woods. They call their neighbor Tony and ask him for help with stand placement. He agrees and is awe struck by the enormous size and amount, of buck sign in this small section of land. When opening day arrives, Mr. Big appears 30 yards and broadside. Crippled by buck fever on his first shot, Colin misses. But he has the wherewithal to listen carefully, and hears the buck stop within 100 yards. He grabs his grunt call and tries it repeatedly, on and off, for the next hour. The flick of an ear gives the buck away.

At 65 yards sees a clear front shoulder. Colin shoots again. The booner drops. Then almost instantly jumps back up, whirls around and heads down the hill full throttle. He scampers down the tree and starts tracking his trophy immediately. A mistake that also cost's him. Blood, tracks and Colin's luck eventually run out as the buck just disappears.

A Season's worth Of 'BIG' Overview

While his dad takes a night stand Colin went to his aunts house up the road. While he starts his story, a slow traveling pick-up catches the group's eye due to the amount of antler sticking above the box. It's the buck he shot this morning and the guy isn't very cordial...
This monstrous 13 point has G-2's measuring 18 inches in length and no visible wounds on his 'faced-up' side. When Colin tries to roll him over the hunter denies him. “That was the biggest buck I've ever seen.” he said. Dejected but not defeated Colin goes back to the same stand and get's a crack at buck #2 of the 3 brutes... at point blank! Here's how it unfolds...
